We plan a series of posters
showing US military aircraft. USAF Strategic Bombers is
complete and ready for publication. It will be followed by USAF
Fighters, USN Warbirds, and two posters showing the military
aircraft of World War II - one for the U.S. Army Air Forces and one
for the U.S. Navy.
Presentation is important. Generally when many aircraft are
shown together, they are shown in profile. This makes maximum use of
space and permits many aircraft to be shown. The illustrations are
also simpler to prepare. Offsetting this is that many
important design features are not shown.
Our USAF Strategic Bombers poster shows everything from the
prop-driven B-29 and B-50 to the ultra modern B-2 Stealth Bomber.
Wing shape changed drastically over the years and it could not be
shown in a profile view. This resulted in our showing the
aircraft from a low angle.
The results were so good, we had planned on showing all the
military planes in this way. Next in line was U.S Army Air
Forces planes of World War II. Research was completed and we
started preparing the illustrations. It quickly became
apparent that the low angle just did not work on these aircraft.
The lower wing dominated the picture and was comparatively boring
compared to the upper wing which usually contains visually striking
markings. As a result, we are starting the illustrations over
again, but will the aircraft from a high angle.
Below are some of the illustrations that were already completed.
We will not use them, but they demonstrate the problem.. |
